Sir Ken Robinson: Do schools kill creativity?
Watch this wise man speak about education and what we should be thinking about in terms of our own children. The power of positive parenting can fit straight into what Sir Ken discusses when he talks about the importance of education of the entire brain. There is a very large amount of the brain gets targeted by our conventional education system, which has a very large emphasis on the science, maths, biology sort of stream. This is of course very important and should not be forgotten or trivialized. However the point that Sir Ken makes is that there are so many talents that people have that are often more creative in nature, that as children, are not nurtured. The result of this neglect of the brain as a whole is that children end up growing up ignoring creative talents that they have. In this ever-changing world that we live in, the speaker points out that children entering the schooling system now, will be retiring in the year 2065 (this video is 5 years old, children entering the schooling system today would be retiring in 2070), and what do we as parents today know about what the world will be like then? Those same children entering the schooling system today, will be leaving university after an undergraduate degree in 15 years time. Even that thought is enough to make you really think. Can you remember how much technology has changed our world in the last 5 years? Can you remember life before the cell phone and the internet? Change and advancement speeds up every year. So whatever you do as a parent, make sure that every talent your child displays is nurtured. Also make sure that your child has every opportunity to discover those talents, particularly those talents that might not be displayed unless they are provided with the correct environment and stimulation. Positive parenting and having the awareness to pick up those skills your child has, are absolutely key to their future and very likely also their career.
